Cagayan Province is located in the Cagayan Valley region in the northern part of the Philippines. Its capital is Tuguegarao City . There are different stories as to the etymology of Cagayan. One is from the term “Catagayan,” meaning “the place where tagay grows.” Tagay is a type of plant that is endemic to the northern province. On the other hand, some linguists claim that the province’s name was derived from the local words for “river,” such as  karayan ,  kayan ,  kayayan , and  kalayan .
